I was tickled pink to be invited to speak at Cultivating Success over the weekend. (Also, if you have never tried the hot-pink-inside watermelon radishes, you should. And yes, I just “shoulded” on you!)
If you haven’t heard of this fantastic program, it is a statewide program (Washington State) to help new farmers create a successful small farm business. The course just wrapped up for 2023, but I think it’s an annual offering. More info here: Cultivating Success.
I also had the honor of meeting in person (yes!) Devra Gartenstein from Patty Pan Cooperative and Business Impact Northwest FBRC and Micha Ide with the WSDA Regional Markets Program.
The last workshops I taught in person were in 2019 and before. There truly is a different ability to connect, respond and interact when meeting in person. I’m such a geek that I love remote work and webinars, (and *not* traveling or even driving!), but it was a great reminder of the value of being in person.
One very kind Cultivating Success participant, made a point of stopping on her way out of class to tell me she had taken our payroll webinar back in February, and how much she enjoyed it. She stressed how valuable it has been and that she has gone back to the recording at least twice to replay certain parts. I was so touched! If you are that kind person and happen to read this: thank you!
That particular webinar was special in that we had a small but very engaged group, who asked such great questions along the way, that I think it made for a richer presentation. This doesn’t happen very often in a webinar format. I loved it!

Payroll Requirements and Taxes Video
Recorded in February 2024, with a farm focus including the latest about farm overtime, and that pesky IRS payroll tax form that is different for farmers (Form 943 instead of Form 941), plus a review volunteers and/or work-trade help.
Though even non-farm businesses would find value in the webinar, because we covered basics such as:
- federal payroll taxes
- WA State payroll taxes
- contractors versus employees
- payroll software issues and options, plus more.

There is more that I want to teach than just payroll. I see so many new business owners (both farmers and non-farmers) who don’t know what they don’t know. I’d love to help these hardworking folks avoid the pitfalls that I see repeated over and over again. Especially in QuickBooks.
